Semester in Scotland Now Offers Humanities Credits

Semester in ScotlandThe Semester in Scotland program from Geneva College has redesigned its curriculum in order to appeal to a broader range of students. Previously designed mostly for Bible and ministry students, the Semester in Scotland program has expanded to provide all students the opportunity to earn nine credits of Geneva’s core requirements.

The changes include the approval of a new course titled Humanities 200, and the ability to fulfil core Bible and social science requirements.

The newly designed program is available to students beginning in the fall 2015 semester.

The Semester in Scotland program has evolved significantly since its formation as an internship program for ministry majors in 2003. Since that time the program shifted to include more coursework. Recently the director of the program, Andrew Quigley, expressed an interest in making the program more appealing to students more broadly.

Dean of Undergraduate Programs Dr. Melinda Stevens explains, “One way to do that is to introduce core credit. So that’s the approach that was pursued.”

The new Humanities 200 course is titled “The Humanities in England and Scotland” and includes a trip to London. Students can count this course as either Humanities 203 or 304 requirements.

Since the changes took effect students have already expressed an interest. English literature major Bethany Cerbus will be participating in the program this fall and believes it will complement her education. “I really wanted to study abroad because I think that it would help with my major,” she explained, “Especially Scotland because British Literature is something that I really love, and I would be so close to where all of my favorite literature takes place.”

The Semester in Scotland program is hosted by the Airdrie Reformed Presbyterian Church in Airdrie, Scotland.  Students live, study and work alongside a caring community of believers and are welcomed into the life of the church. Former participant Ethan Matthews says of the experience, “It is a beautiful program dedicated more to your personal faith in Christ Jesus than anything else.”
