Freshman set to impact Geneva women’s soccer under leadership of strong senior class

Last season was a headache for ninth-year head coach Linda Sumner – a literal headache - as more than two thirds of Geneva’s team suffered either a concussion or another injury at some point in the season. Uncontrollable elements aside, the Golden Tornadoes return an experienced senior class made up of three time All-conference player Heidi Mann (Colorado Springs, CO/Evangelical Christian Academy), midfielder Hannah Beckhusen (Baldwinsville, NY/Faith Heritage) and goal keeper Anna McMullen (Uniontown, OH/Lake Center Christian). The trio is expected to lead on and off the field as the young team looks to improve on its record from last season.

“Our seniors have been working hard during the spring and summer to come back ready for a great season.” said head coach Linda Sumner.  “I am very pleased with these three young ladies and the leadership they are taking with our returning players.”

This season Geneva will rely on the strength of the seniors as well as its 2014 leading goal scorer and conference honorable mention, junior Kimberly Orihel (Clinton, OH/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) who found the back of the net seven times, and assisted in five more goals.  “Kimmie is a creative forward who will continue to lead the offense this season.”

Sumner is optimistic that the large incoming freshman class will provide much needed support and as well as future stability.  ”With eleven new faces coming in for the 2015 season, we are looking forward to the contribution the new players will make for us as freshmen and beyond.” explained Sumner.

Geneva Women’s Soccer looks forward to hosting Carlow at home Saturday, September 5 at noon for its season opener.
