BEAVER FALLS - The Geneva College defense held Carnegie Mellon University running back Sam Benger to 109 yards less than W&J had allowed the week before but it was small consolation as the Tartans defeated Geneva 35-7 on homecoming.

Benger gained 194 yards but 111 of those and both of his touchdowns came after intermission as Carnegie Mellon broke the game open. At halftime, CMU led just 14-7 and the Golden Tornadoes had threatened to tie the game in the final minute before turning the ball over on downs.

The Tartans scored three times in the third quarter – on two runs by Benger (1 and 47 yards) and a 2-yard run by Zach Cree and Geneva didn’t mount a credible threat after that.

CMU had taken the lead in the first half on a pair of runs by quarterback Andrew Hearon but Geneva cut the gap in half when Dylan Jones (New Castle, PA/Laurel) scored on a 3-yard run with 8:33 left. After that, the Geneva defense forced a punt and the Golden Tornadoes mounted a 13-play, 54-yard drive that reached the Carnegie Mellon 26-yard line but ended after four incomplete passes with 19 seconds left in the half.

Jones finished with 69 yards rushing and sophomore Aaron Channing (Horsham, PA.Hatboro-Horsham) passed for 142 but Geneva’s offense provided few highlights. Defensively, senior Thomas Benyo (Berlin Center, OH/Western Reserve) was the leader with 15 tackles.

Now 2-2, Geneva has its bye week before travelling to Thomas More on October 10.
