Erie, PA- The Golden Tornadoes ripped through day one at the PSU-Behrend Tournament. Geneva first defeated D'Youville in three (25-14, 25-21, 25-10) followed by another three set win over Frostburg State (25-15, 25-16, 25-15). The two wins raise Geneva’s overall record to 7-1.

It was a good day for Ohio natives Gabrielle Dickson (Brookfield, OH/Kennedy Catholic) and Olivia Test (Negley, OH/Heartland Christian) along with local Rachel Netherland (Aliquippa, PA/Central Valley). Dickson earned 23 digs in three sets while serving three aces in game one. Test tallied 14 kills in game two and Netherland was a jack of all trades affecting every aspect of the game.

Other team leaders in game one included McKenna Shick (Knox, PA/Keystone Jr-Sr High School) with 10 assists, Marissa Naples (Cortland, OH/Lakeview) with nine and Netherland with eight assists and two serve aces. The Golden Tornadoes racked up 11 service aces against D’Youville. Netherland led the team in kills with eight.

“Netherland played really well today, all day, both offensively setting and serving,” said co-head coach Curt Conser.

“Olivia Test had a monster of a game over Frostburg.”

Test earned 14 kills and four blocks against the state school from Maryland. In addition to Test’s offense, Erica Hughes (North Jackson, OH/Jackson Milton) tallied eight kills.

“We played smoothly, kept errors down and served tough.”

Similar to game one, Geneva dominated the service line with 13 team serve aces. Netherland, McKala King (Uniontown, OH/Lake) and Rachel Tuck (Burke, VA/Lake Braddock Secondary School) each had three aces apiece.

Tomorrow, Geneva will open at 12:30 p.m. against Defiance.

“Defiance, I think, is the team to beat in our schedule. They have good ball handling skills.”

After facing Defiance Geneva will face tournament host PSU Behrend at 2:30 p.m.
