Women’s Soccer off to best NCAA Division III start with 2-0 win at Marietta

Marietta, OH - Geneva women’s soccer is 4-0 after defeating Marietta 2-0 Saturday afternoon. The 4-0 record is a landmark for the program since it became full NCAA Division III members within the Presidents’ Athletic Conference in the fall of 2011.

It already was the best start since 2010, when Geneva started the season 3-0 then drew a tie in double overtime to Buffalo State, then won five straight before two more overtime ties. Now, the 2015 season marks the first Division III season that the Golden Tornadoes are back to their dominant winning ways.

This win was thanks to Geneva’s strong offense, led by senior Heidi Mann (Colorado Springs, CO/Evangelical Christian Academy) and junior Kimberly Orihel (Green, OH/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy).

“Despite the rain, Kimmie and Heidi were each able to find the net again this game for the win,” said head coach Linda Sumner. “Anna did a great job, earning the shutout in goal.”

Mann crushed a ball 30 yards from the net for the first Geneva goal in the 17th minute. In the second half (75:54) Mann connected with Orihel who was inside the 18-yard box. Orihel placed the ball in the lower left corner of the net for the 2-0 final.

Senior goalkeeper Anna McMullen (Uniontown, OH/Lake Center Christian) earned the shutout with six saves.

After playing four games in eight days the Golden Tornadoes will take the week without competition before facing Mt. Union on Saturday, September 19 at 1 p.m.
