Medical Volunteer to Speak at Geneva

Geneva Seal

Dr. David [last name withheld for security reasons], a Geneva College alumnus and medical doctor, will present “Loving Muslims” on Friday, October 16, 2015 as part of the Geneva Visiting Artist and Lecture Series. The event is to be held at 10:10 a.m. in Skye Lounge of the Student Center.

For the past two-and-a-half years, Dr. David and his wife have been working at a Christian hospital in northern Africa as medical volunteers involved in medical education. They will be returning at the end of the year to continue this mission.

The couple has been doing medical work in central Africa for 35 years. Dr. David has written a number of books detailing their experiences, calling and testimonies.

Dr. David grew up in Cambodia and Vietnam, where his parents served as missionaries. He returned to the United States to attend college and earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Geneva. He went on to obtain a medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, where he met his wife.

After training in general surgery for several years, French and tropical medicine, Dr. David and his family moved to Africa to start church-based medical work. During that time, they opened a nursing school and the Bongolo Hospital.

After returning to the States, Dr. David completed his residency and received certification through the American Board of Surgery. He and his family returned to Africa and, with a team of doctors and nurses, expanded the Bongolo Hospital to be a fully-functioning, 160-bed facility that specializes in surgery, pediatrics, ophthalmology, HIV/AIDS treatment, and primary health care. Today, the Bongolo Hospital is treats tens of thousands of patients every year.

In 1996, Dr. David and 12 other surgeons founded the Pan-African Academy of Christian Surgeons (PAACS), an international organization under the Christian Medical and Dental Associations that aims to provide formal, five-year surgical residency training programs at Christian hospitals. Since 1997, 11 training programs have been established in eight African countries.
