Midnight Madness Kicks Off Basketball Season

Midnight Madness

Geneva College is beginning the basketball season by hosting Midnight Madness on Wednesday, October 28 from 10-11:30 p.m. in the Metheny Fieldhouse. This event provides students an opportunity to meet the men’s and women’s Golden Tornado basketball teams.

An assortment of games, giveaways and prize contests will take place throughout the event. In addition, awards for both individual and group costumes will be given out during the costume competition. Geneva reminds students that all costumes must be in good taste, recognizing that the event is a fun way to honor God and each other.

The men′s team is under the direction of head coach Jeff Santarsiero. Santarsiero is set to begin his 19th year as Geneva′s head coach, which is the second longest in the history of Geneva basketball.

The head coach of the women’s team is Lori Wynn, who took over the program in 2011. Prior to Geneva, Wynn spent eight years as the head coach for Malone College.

The Golden Tornadoes are full members of NCAA Division III and the Presidents’ Athletic Conference. Geneva has also continued its relationship as a member within the ECAC (Eastern College Athletic Conference).

Geneva has long been recognized as the Birthplace of College Basketball. Ian Naismith, grandson of the inventor of basketball Dr. James Naismith, affirmed the title based on his grandfather’s writings.

The first college basketball game was organized intramurally by Geneva students in February 1892 under the coaching of professor Charles O. Bemies, Geneva's first Athletic Director and protégé of Dr. Naismith. Geneva first played in collegiate competition on April 8, 1893 using peach baskets as goals, defeating the New Brighton YMCA 3 - 0.

Doors open at 9:45 p.m. Admission is free, but a current student ID is required.
