Support Groups for Students

Support Groups

Support Groups are an important part of the emotional well-being of every campus community. At Geneva College, the Health and Wellness Center, faculty members and others in the campus community facilitate a variety of groups for students.

The Health and Wellness Center recently shared information about two of its offerings. Soar, which was previously known as Hush, is a support group that provides a place of safety and healing for women with a history of sexual abuse or violence. Another group, Recreating You, provides support, education and encouragement for women who wrestle with issues of low self-esteem and a negative body image.

Facilitated by communication professor Jeffrey Schindel, The Way Out is a group for male and female students who struggle with unwanted same-sex attraction.

Grief Share is run by Dr. Dean Smith, Professor Emeritus of Bible, and his wife Nancy, former Director of Geneva’s Academic Counseling Center and Educational Support Services (ACCESS) Office.

Amy Solman, the Director of Counseling Services says that these support groups are extremely important; “In my professional opinion, groups are very valuable as they help individuals know they are not alone in their struggles. They provide education, support and accountability.”

Participation and personal information that students share as part of a support group is confidential. Upon joining a group at Geneva, all members are required to agree to and sign a confidentiality contract. Violation of confidentiality is taken extremely seriously.

Students interested in joining or learning more about these campus support groups should contact Solman at 724-847-4081 or alsolman@geneva.edu
