Geneva starts strong but can’t sustain, falls to W&J 34-13

BEAVER FALLS, PA - Geneva got off to a strong start and was tied with Washington & Jefferson 10-10 until the final five seconds of the first half. However, Geneva couldn’t sustain the success as W&J’s Ted Ford kicked a 25-yard field goal to close the first half and the Presidents scored the first 17 points of the second half to seal the 34-13 win.

Washington & Jefferson improves to 6-2, 4-2 in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference.

“I couldn’t be more proud of our effort,” said Geneva coach Geno DeMarco. “We come out of the locker room in the second half and they come up with a big play. We had a busted coverage and they capitalized.”

That play was a 70-yard pass from Pete Coughlin to Asa Costlenock that gave W&J a two-score lead and Geneva never got closer than two scores again. Coughlin threw two more scoring passes in the second half while Geneva could counter only with a second field goal.

The Golden Tornadoes, though, did show a new wrinkle in their offense as freshman Javid Ellis (Port St. Lucie, FL/Saint Lucie West Centennial) took over the reins at quarterback and passed 22 times for 18 yards and ran 14 times for 45 yards and Geneva’s only touchdown.

Defensively, Geneva was led by sophomore Nate Cannon (Palm Beach Gardens, FL/Kings Academy) with nine tackles, a pass broken up that appeared to prevent a touchdown, and had 139 yards in returns.

Geneva, now 2-6 and 1-5 in the PAC, continues its season next Saturday, visiting St. Vincent at 1 p.m.
