Finleyville, PA – Geneva men’s cross country team finished second at the Washington & Jefferson Invitational Friday evening. Seven teams competed in the 8K.

“The weather was cold and wet and the course was muddy and hilly, in other words, a perfect fall evening for cross country!” said head coach Brian Yowler.

“We were relaxed, had fun, competed hard and ran our best race of the season. Our athletes desire to use their talents to glorify God and they certainly did that tonight!”

Sophomore Clay Smith (Williamsport, MD/Williamsport) led Geneva with a fifth place finish (27:35.10) followed by freshmen Josh Duffie (Canton, OH/Glenoak) (28:03.85), junior Ken Kutcel (Medina, OH/Medina) (28:34.96) and freshmen Andrew Domencic (Pittsburgh, PA/Avonworth) (28:46.71) who all finished as top ten runners.

“We knew going into the race W&J was the team to beat, we competed really hard but came up a little short. However, we were thrilled to come home with a second place finish,” said Yowler.

“It was easily Clay’s best race of his college career. He ran a new PR (personal record) by 21 seconds on a very challenging course.”

“Our average time among our top five runners was 28:30, the fastest since 2012!”

“In particular, Clay, Adler Roth and Curtis Watson had impressive races, all improving their 8K times by over one minute.”

The Golden Tornadoes will enjoy a week off from competition, returning to action Saturday, October 17 at the Oberlin Invitational.
