Beaver Falls, PA – Geneva women’s soccer edged Chatham in a 5-4 decision at Reeves Field Wednesday in the last two seconds of the game. Geneva had not found the back of an opponent’s net since September 9 at Mount Union when the Golden Tornadoes six game winless streak began.

Now 5-6, 1-3 in the Presidents’ Athletics Conference, Geneva trailed Chatham the entire game until the equalizer by sophomore forward Laiton Suders (Chambersburg, PA/Cumberland Valley Christian) at the 80 minute mark. Junior forward Kimberly Orihel (Green, OH/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) carried the ball into the 18 yard box and scored the game winning goal with only 00:02 remaining.

“I am very proud of this team,” said head coach Linda Sumner. “This was a great come from behind win and a true team effort from every player.”

The visiting Cougars created a 2-0 lead after the first 40 minutes of play. Senior midfielder Heidi Mann (Colorado Springs, CO/Evangelical Christian Academy) narrowed the gap, finishing a cross from Megan Schoeneweis (Moon, PA/Moon).

Chatham widened their 2-1 lead early in the second half to 3-1. Schoeneweis answered Chatham’s goal one minute later finishing a cross from Mann.

At 64:59, Geneva’s own goal lifted the Cougars with another two goal lead, now 4-2.

Orihel started Geneva’s three goal run for the win with an unassisted goal at the top of the 18 yard box.

Suders tied the game, assisted by Schoeneweis with 10 minutes remaining.

Avoiding overtime and breaking the six game losing skid, Orihel sealed the win in her eighth goal of the season in the last two seconds of regulation.

Friday, October 16 Geneva continues play at Waynesburg starting at 6 p.m.
