Justice Week Engages Biblical Justice

Justice Week

Geneva College’s Justice Week is a time for students and the campus community to engage concepts of biblical justice. Events that are part of this effort will take place Monday, November 9 through Friday, November 13. Every day features a time for prayer on the Pedestrian Mall at noon. In addition, a variety of events focused on praise, prayer and conversation are scheduled.

“Who Cares about Justice?” is a panel discussion scheduled for Monday, November 9 at 7 p.m. in the West Reading Room of McCartney Library. Panel members include Dr. Brad Frey, Wendy VanWhye, Caleb Musselman, Herb Bailey and Millie Johnson. The discussion is centered around the definition of justice and why people should care about achieving it.

Tuesday, November 10 feature “Are You Sitting Down?,” centered on the topic of abortion. Conversations will occur at various times throughout the day. Further details are available on table tents in Alexander Dining Hall and the Brig.

“Can You Choose Hope?” is a musical event on Wednesday, November 11, at 3:03 p.m. in the Brig. The band Hope Country will perform and the organization Trades of Hope will speak about fair trade. Items will be available purchase at this event.

“How Do We Love the Stranger?” provides a time to learn about the Syria War refugee crisis, as well as to pray for the many people being affected in this situation. This event will be in Johnston Gym on Thursday, November 12 at 9:30 p.m.

Justice Week concludes on Friday, November 13 with “Can You Escape the Room?,” held in the lowest level of the Student Center. This event addresses and allows participants to engage the complex issue of modern day slavery. This event requires prior registration, which may be completed in the Center for Student Engagement offices.

“Justice Week is an opportunity for the Geneva community to come together for one week to have intentional programming, conversations, dialogues, and activities focused on raising awareness, providing education, and promoting experiences that call students into a deeper understanding of biblical justice,” says Missy Nyeholt, Service Learning Coordinator for The Center for Student Engagement.

She continues, “Micah 6 says, ‘And what does the Lord require of you, but to do justice, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?’ This week we hope that you recognize the amazing grace that has been extended to you through the saving grace of our Lord, Jesus Christ. And out of this recognition our desire is that you would take time to reflect on your own life, to extend that reflection to see and recognize the injustices that might be happening around you, and that in humility you would begin to find ways to prayerfully and graciously extend mercy and justice in those situations.”
