NEW WILMINGTON, PA- Geneva’s game with Westminster – 118th meeting between the schools was full of excitement. At one point in the first half, there were turnovers on three consecutive plays – and not because of mistakes but because of great defensive play. The second quarter alone, had a fake punt, a blocked punt, and an onside kick.

However, Westminster eventually broke through after a scoreless first quarter to score 19 in the second and rolled to a 32-0 win. Westminster’s first touchdown was scored on a 1-yard run by Ben Walters, the first play after the blocked punt. The Titans successfully executed the onside kick to get the ball back and scored on an 8-yard run by Dominique McKinley.

“Our special teams hurt us today,” said Geneva coach Geno DeMarco. “It’s a domino effect, guys that were playing special teams at the beginning of the year are now playing offense and defense so injuries hurt everywhere.

“But give Westminster credit, they’re a very good team and have the best defense they’ve had in years.”

Geneva, playing without starting quarterback Javid Ellis (Port St. Lucie, FL/Saint Lucie West Centennial) and starting tailback Dylan Jones (New Castle, PA/Laurel) threatened but couldn’t score. Sophomore Aaron Channing (Horsham. PA/Hatboro-Horsham) passed for 210 yards but he was forced to pass 51 times by the top defensive team in the conference because Geneva netted just seven yards rushing in the game.

Defensively, Geneva was led by senior Thomas Benyo (Berlin Center, OH/Western Reserve) with nine tackles, one for a loss.

“Our kids played hard but it just didn’t happen,” DeMarco said. “We’ll be back.”

Geneva finishes the season 2-8, 1-7 in Presidents’ Athletic Conference action.
