While it can be a challenge to sum up the impact of a higher education in a 30-second video story, Geneva College did just that, based on what many students and alumni say is a leading factor in making a Geneva education special: the relationship between faculty and students. The commercials, called Faculty: Impact of a Geneva Education, which are now airing on local television stations, feature real Geneva people in interactions that are common in the close Christian community.
In the first commercial, an alumna returns to campus to tell a favorite professor how much of an impact he has had on her faith, her career and her entire life. She wants to say thank-you. In the second commercial, an adult online student comes to campus to meet a favorite professor in person. She explains that she didn’t think she could manage her classes with her family and job, but the professor really helped. She, too, was motivated by the need to say thank-you.
These scenes, which are threads of a real-life Geneva education, are presented by Geneva people. The professor in both commercials is Dr. Jonathan Watt, Chair of the Bible Department and beloved Biblical Studies professor. Returning alumnus in the undergraduate video is Laura (Capper ’07) DePietro, who expounds, “Having Dr. Watt as my Bible professor while a student at Geneva was a great experience. The way he taught made the stories of the Old Testament come alive, and had a big impact on my understanding and appreciation for them which I have carried with me beyond the classroom.”
Shannon (Gallagher ‘11) Angelo, who attended Geneva as an adult, is in the adult online commercial. She notes, “Dr. Watt was a great teacher! He was always available to help when needed and had such great insights to add to the topics studied.”
