The Wednesday, December 16, 2015 episode of WORLD Radio’s The World and Everything in It has been posted to Geneva College’s website at http://www.geneva.edu/faith/the-world. The midweek edition of the show features the highlights of this week’s Republican presidential debate and a theological look at Star Wars.

In today’s top news, Los Angeles school officials defend the decision to close the district’s 1,100 schools. The schools were closed despite FBI and police claims that an emailed bomb threat sent to school board members by someone claiming to be a jihadist was a hoax. The superintendent says that the recent attack in nearby San Bernardino forced him to err on the side of caution.

A review by the intelligence community confirms that at least two of Hillary Clinton’s emails were classified as top secret when they arrived on her server. At least one of the messages is still top secret. Reportedly, the messages contain information on the movement of North Korean nuclear missiles and a U.S. drone strike.

Saudi Arabia announces that more than 30 primarily Muslim nations have formed a new military alliance to fight terrorism. This alliance follows international pressure on Muslim nations to step up in the fight against terror. Notable countries that have not joined the alliance are Iraq, Syria and Iran.

The Associated Press accuses several U.S. restaurant and grocery chains of selling shrimp peeled by slave labor. AP says that Burmese migrants, including children, are sold to factories in Thailand to do the work. The businesses say that they were unaware of the practice and will switch suppliers or move operations in house.

In the White House Wednesday portion of the show, WORLD discusses the fifth Republican debate. The most important aspect of the debate, according to WORLD, is probably the three-man race between Donald Trump, Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio. Chief political analyst Kent Covington discusses Ben Carson’s drop in the polls, as well as the performance and standing of all of the Republican candidates.

In light of the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens premier, WORLD examines the spiritual themes of the franchise that should not be accepted uncritically. The segment scrutinizes the myths about humanity presented in the movies from a Christian perspective.
