Thiel’s hot finish sends Geneva men to 79-67 defeat

geneva basketball

GREENVILLE, PA - A short jumper by Geneva junior Chaese Vaudrin (Uniontown, OH/Lake) with 9:20 left in the game tied the score at 51-51 in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference opener for both teams but Thiel responded with a 28-16 finish to send the Golden Tornadoes’ to their fifth straight defeat to open the season.

“I thought we played well at times,” said head coach Jeff Santarsiero. “We need to play consistent basketball. This team needs to value every possession like it is the final minute of the game.”

Vaudrin continues to be a bright spot for Geneva this year as he scored a season-high 29 points. Geneva, however, did not benefit from balanced scoring as the only other player to score in double figures was freshman Danny Torok (Grove City, PA/Grove City). Sophomore Jimmy Leichliter (Connellsville, PA/Connellsville) grabbed a game high 11 rebounds and freshman David Oliver (Sewickley, PA/Quaker Valley) had 10 as Geneva held a 46-41 edge in rebounding.

The edge in shooting, however, definitely fell Thiel’s way in two other areas shooting and turnovers. The Tomcats made eight of 10 three-point attempts while Geneva made just six of 23 – Torok was the only Genevan to connect on more than half of his attempts from the field. Geneva committed 15 turnovers compared to just eight by the hosts.

Geneva will return to action Saturday night, hosting St. Vincent at 7:30.
