Celebrating the Legacy of Dr. King through Artistic Expression

Martin Luther King Jr. Night of the Arts

The Geneva College Center for Student Engagement (CSE) is hosting the Martin Luther King Jr. Night of the Arts on Monday, January 18 in Skye Lounge. This is a time for the community to come together to honor the cultural impact of the late Dr. King, and to celebrate his life and legacy through the arts.

The event begins at 7 p.m. with time for attendees to mingle and enjoy appetizers. The formal portion of the program then begins at 7:30 p.m.

The evening features a mix of Geneva and community members, including a musical performance by Geneva students, a presentation by local elementary and High School MLK Jr. oral essay contest winners, and a creative reading by Geneva's Reading Group.

There will also be a dramatic performance by Paul Spradley, a professional speaker and diversity consultant. Spradley will put on three different original sketches involving audience participation inspired by the Civil Rights Movement.

In addition, Elizabeth Asche Douglas, Professor Emeritus of Fine Arts and Humanities and principal artist of Douglas Art Gallery in Rochester, PA, will present a musical performance emphasizing the musical preferences of Dr. King and the era of his civil rights leadership.

Kristie Martel, Interim Coordinator of Diversity and Inclusion, said, “Geneva embraces a robust view of diversity derived from the biblical story of a God who created a world of great beauty and variety. While we acknowledge that God’s Kingdom is fully reflected by one human race and a unified Christian church, we live in a fallen world in need of Christ’s reconciliation. The CSE seeks to provide support for our intercultural students and educate the campus on issues of diversity and inclusion.”
