Geneva’s PRSSA Enters Bateman Competition

PRSSA

Geneva College students are participating in a national competition sponsored by the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) which will launch on February 15-19, 2016. The Bateman Case Study Competition is the PRSSA’s premier national competition for members of PRSSA chapters, and provides the opportunity to apply classroom education and internship experiences to create and implement a full public relations campaign.

The goals of this year’s Bateman Competition are to increase awareness on college campuses and in communities about veterans who are students around the globe, as well as increasing the support and networks for these deserving individuals.

Geneva students Mikayla Covington, Celia Harris, Abigail Stevens and Kelsey Robinson have formed a team named “The Geneva College Golden Tornadoes.” They are currently developing a public relations campaign to incorporate Geneva’s involvement with war veterans in the community.

Covington, senior communication major and Vice President of the PRSSA Geneva chapter, is confident that Geneva’s team is equipped with the skills and tools necessary to successfully implement the team’s campaign. "It feels great to be able to put the skills that I've learned during the last three years at Geneva to use,” Covington said. “I am confident that all four of us have been properly equipped with the skills we need to compete in the Bateman. We have a diverse skillset amongst the four of us, so it's been fun to work together and see something come to fruition that will benefit the Geneva community as a whole."

This is the first year that Geneva students have participated in the Bateman Competition. All four team members say that they feel well trained by Geneva’s communication program to proudly represent the college through the completion.

Over 75 teams from around the United States enter the competition each year and are given the opportunity to create a plan according to their skillset and the needs of their community.

Harris, a senior communication major, sees this competition as an opportunity not only for the four participants, but for Geneva as a whole: “All four of us work very well together, which in itself is a major advantage, but the most valuable piece to this campaign is that we are representing Geneva and Christ in all that we do. This is a major motivator for us.”

Three finalist teams will be selected on April 17.

Harris is confident in the Golden Tornadoes’ campaign, even with the time constraint that they are facing. She said, “We all have very efficient work ethic. So I am not worried at all about the timeliness of our campaign. All the members of the team are eager to be finalists, and are proud to represent Geneva in this amazing opportunity.”
