Crossroads Asks the Geneva Question

Geneva Question

Geneva QuestionThe Geneva College Crossroads Department is launching the Geneva Question. Developed by the Geneva Crossroads office and junior engineering major Ben Mills, this initiative aims is to stimulate intentional and in-depth thinking and debate.

Mills, a member of the Crossroads team, believes that the Geneva Question will “challenge, integrate and invite students from every major and background to think critically about issues involving the Geneva community as a whole and provoke campus-wide discussion.”

Interested students will be paired with a Geneva faculty or staff member of their choice to help refine and create rationales for the questions. There are 15 faculty and staff members who have expressed a willingness to work with students as mentors. However, students are invited to approach other faculty or staff members if they desire.

Questions to be considered must be emailed to crossroads@geneva.edu by March, 31, 2016. A blind panel of faculty and students will evaluate submissions and select a winning entry that members believe will promote deep conversation across a range of topics, be of interest to students of all majors and enrich the collective life of the Geneva community as a whole.

On April 20, the winning question will be announced. The winning question will then be explored during the 2016-17 academic year.

“Our aspiration is that students will encounter the question in their residence halls, during GVALS presentations, at events sponsored by the Center for Student Engagement, around meals, and, if faculty find the question applicable to a topic of study, in their classes,” says Dr. Jeff Cole, Director of Crossroads.

Cash prizes of $100 will be awarded to both the winning student and mentor.

Questions submitted for consideration must encompass a host of topics and fields of study in a concise manner. Entries should be open-ended, metaphysical, promote theoretical discussion and have practical applications. Examples include: “Is happiness attainable?,” “What is the ‘sublime’ and how can we recognize it?,” and “Is there an absolute limit to human discovery?”
