vb coachesBeaver Falls, PA – Geneva’s Wendy Smith and Curt Conser have been coaching together since 2000. Wendy Smith has been at Geneva since 1999 as the assistant volleyball coach. In 2000, Smith became the Golden Tornadoes head coach, Conser playing the role as number one assistant.

It wasn’t until 2007 when Smith and Conser decided to share head coach responsibilities as co-head coaches. In the last 16 years (200-2015), the duo obtained a 289-226 coaching record (.561 winning percentage). As co-head coaches for nine years (2007-2015) they compiled a 204-98 record (.675 winning percentage). In 2011, Geneva College became full-fledged members of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III, joining the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) after a four-year transition period from the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).

Even more impressively then their previous successes, from 2011-2015 as NCAA DIII members, Smith and Conser earned an overall record of 126-51 record (.711 winning percentage) and a 77-14 record (.846 winning percentage) against PAC competition. Under their direction, Geneva has made a PAC post-season appearance since eligible in 2011 including earning the title of 2011 PAC Champions and 2014 South Region Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Champions.

February 2, 2016 marks a new chapter for the Geneva volleyball program as co-head coach Conser resigned his position in order to focus on his family and his volleyball club Infinity located in Salem, Ohio.

“Curt has obviously served Geneva College and the women’s volleyball program well over the last 16 years,” said Van Zanic, Geneva College’s Athletic Director. “I am very thankful to Curt for his work at Geneva and for his friendship to all of us over the years.”

“Wendy has agreed to take on the role of full-time volleyball coach and will no longer be working in Geneva’s Institutional Advancement,” said Zanic.

When Smith hasn’t been on the volleyball court she had been additionally serving as the College’s Planned Giving Officer over the last five years.

“Clearly Coach Smith has played a huge part in building a legacy of excellence for Geneva College’s volleyball program,” said Zanic. “I’m confident she will continue that excellence as she takes over an already very successful program. I know she is extremely excited to face this next challenge in her coaching life and I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that we are putting the program in very good hands.”
