W&J’s Third Quarter Comeback Hands Geneva 87-72 Loss

Geneva

Beaver Falls, PA – The Geneva College women’s basketball team played an exciting first half, keeping fans on the edge of their seats, but the excitement didn’t carry over to the second half.

Miranda Heaney’s (New Castle PA/Union) three-pointer at 4:01 in the second quarter, followed by a solid defensive play by Heidi Mann’s (Colorado Springs, CO/Evangelical Christian Academy) that forced a turnover, Geneva tied the game against Washington & Jefferson, 31-31. The battle continued and Geneva went to halftime with a 40-39 advantage on a jumper in the paint by Rachel Moore (Vandergrift, PA/Apollo Ridge).

Despite the slight advantage, Washington & Jefferson’s third quarter took control of the game, handing Geneva a 87-72 final loss. The loss lowers Geneva’s overall record to 9-11, 6-7 in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference.

“We played really hard,” said head coach Lori Wynn. “They tried to do what we asked them to do. W&J has a fantastic post-player. Despite the loss, I like what we did tonight.”

The Golden Tornadoes were held to four points in the first four minutes of the second half while the Presidents racked up 13 points taking back the lead 52-40.

Geneva would be unable to regain the lead again.

Mann finished the work day with team-high 15 points, six rebounds. Heaney also earned double digit points with 11 and grabbed five rebounds.

Nicole Hyland (Trafford, PA/Penn Trafford) and Lydia Songer (Wexford PA/Pine Richland) each scored eight points. Hyland earned team-high nine rebounds.

Saturday, February 6 the Golden Tornadoes are at Grove City starting at 1 p.m.
