The Genevans Proclaims "All His Benefits" in Pittsburgh

The Genevans

The Genevans, student choir of Geneva College, presents its sacred choral program, “Forget Not All His Benefits,” at the First Presbyterian Church of Pittsburgh this Saturday, April 2, 2016 at 7:30 p.m. The concert marks the conclusion of The Genevans’ spring tour of the northeastern United States.

The concert is open to the public and free of charge. Free-will donations will be accepted.

Two new compositions highlight the ensemble’s 78th concert season. Junior communication major Michael Kearney of Mount Sinai, NY, wrote a five-movement motet on Psalm 103. Jim and Doris Miller, grandparents of senior music education major Anna McMullen of Uniontown, OH, commissioned Geneva professor Dr. Byron Curtis to compose the anthem “The Rebel Guest.” Both compositions focus on the “steadfast love of the Lord.”

Conductor Dr. David Kenneth Smith selected additional works that proclaim God’s innumerable gifts of grace to mankind. The concert begins with “O Sing a New Song to the Lord,” a traditional introit from Psalm 96. Other pieces include “I Thank You God for Most This Amazing Day,” “Thou Who Wast Rich,” two movements from the Bach cantata “Gott der Herr ist Sonn und Schild,” “Beautiful Savior” and “E’en So, Lord Jesus, Quickly Come.”

Senior music and Spanish major Becca Wethered from Bristow, VA, performs “The Lord Is My Light” for the offertory, accompanied on piano by Michael Kearney.

Intermission features performances by the Grace Notes, a women’s ensemble, and the Eight Bells, a double barbershop quartet.

The Genevans share a special connection to First Presbyterian Church through the ministry of Rev. Clarence E. Macartney, who served the congregation from 1927 to 1957, and for whom Geneva’ library is named. The musical ministry of The Genevans reflects not only Macartney’s Scottish Presbyterian heritage but also the evangelistic appeal of his preaching. Smith comments, “I’m excited to bring The Genevans’ music to a church that shares such a long history with us!”

Having toured domestically as well as internationally, The Genevans have long tradition of inspirational choral singing in Pittsburgh. The group’s mission is to engage audiences while glorifying God and ministering with important spiritual truth. Over the course of its long history, The Genevans have acquired a reputation for choral excellence, musical variety and spiritual impact.
