Geneva softball opens 2016 with split in Florida

Geneva

Fort Myers, FL – Geneva opened the season with a 13-5 win over Bethany Lutheran as the Golden Tornadoes pounded out 12 hits.

Freshmen Haley Sainato (New Castle, PA/Mohawk) recorded the first hit of the season on a single to centerfield and scored the first run of the season on a sacrifice fly by Laura Beck (Canfield, OH/Canfield). Junior Lucia Fee (Wampum, PA/Mohawk) drove home junior Clara Sevy (Sykesville, MD/Chapelgate Christian), who had walked, for a 2-0 first inning lead.

Sainato, Fee and sophomore Laura Innocenzi (Cortland, OH/Lakeview) each finished game one with two hits. Beck helped the offense with three RBIs. Sainato scored three runs in her first collegiate game.

“I was not surprised at all that we were able to come out and score runs,” said head coach Van Zanic. “There is no question that the strength of this team is going to be to get on base and score runs. We just have to do a better job of making routine plays and stopping the other team to score.”

The 1-0 Golden Tornadoes faced Dominican (IL) for game two of day one. Geneva dropped an 11-6 decision, despite a five-run fourth inning that allowed Geneva to come back and tie the game, but that was the extent of the offense.

Sainato, Fee and junior Taylor Yarletts (New Castle, PA/Mohawk) each finished the nightcap with two hits. Sevy had two RBIs, including a double RBI to center field in the productive fourth.

Freshmen righty pitcher Emily Keslar (Mt. Pleasant, PA / Connellsville) threw 13.0 innings earning three strikeouts.

The Golden Tornadoes will be back in action on Wednesday, March 9 against Elms and Marian starting at 9 a.m. at the Northwest Complex.
