2016 Geneva Softball Season Outlook

Beck

BeckGeneva returns six starters for the 2016 season, including a pair of switch-hitting seniors –first baseman Laura Beck (Canfield, OH/Canfield) and outfielder Dayna Hicks (Beaver Falls, PA/Blackhawk). Beck returns as the Golden Tornadoes top hitter with a .291 batting average with 32 hits and 13 runs batted in (RBI). Hicks led off last year and hit .287 while leading the team with 33 hits.

Geneva’s 2016 squad’s talent is spread through the classes. Starting juniors Lucia Fee (Wampum, PA/Mohawk), Clara Sevy (Sykesville, MD/Chapelgate Christian) and Taylor Yarletts (New Castle, PA/Mohawk) all bring experience, both offensively and defensively.

Right-handed hitting third baseman Fee finished her sophomore campaign batting .283 with 32 hits and a team-high 29 RBIs. Left-handed hitting Sevy, an outfielder, batted .280 with 30 hits last season stepped into the batter’s box 107 times hitting 30 earning a .280 hitting percentage. Yarletts had a pair of home runs last year with 13 rbi.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed this team throughout the preseason. They have been a very coachable group and a group that has come together as a team very quickly,” said head coach Van Zanic.

“We have gotten some great leadership from our upperclassmen that has enabled our younger players to feel fully engaged from day one.”

Two newcomers will handle the pitching duties and both are righthanders. Freshmen Emily Keslar (Mt. Pleasant, PA / Connellsville) and junior Brooke Shyda (Lebanon, PA / Lebanon) will both see action.

“There is still much uncertainty about our team and who we can be but I’m excited about the prospects. We are short on depth and really must remain healthy. If we do stay healthy we could have a fun year.”
