Geneva Track Teams Open Outdoor Season in Myrtle Beach

Geneva

Myrtle Beach, SC – After coming out of successful indoor track and field seasons, the Geneva track teams traveled south to South Carolina to compete in the Coach O Coastal Carolina Invitational at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium on March 11-12, 2016.

“This was a great start to the outdoor season,” said head coach Phil Thompson. “We had some great performances this weekend. I'm very proud of how this team responded to the first outdoor meet after a long Indoor Season.”

Sophomore hurdler Nicole Bartoletta continues to be a standout athlete for the women’s track and field team. In the 100 hurdle event, she placed 12th with a time of 15.74 seconds. Her time has already been fast enough to qualify again for the end of season outdoor meet Eastern Athletic Conference (ECAC).

The 4x100 women’s relay excelled as a unit, placing fifth with a time of 49.69 seconds, setting a new school record and qualified the team for the ECAC. The relay team included Bartoletta, Sarah Klein (Columbus, IN / Columbus East), Kaylee Loose (Beaver, PA / Beaver), and Jessica Kelosky (Fombell, PA / Riverside).

The men’s team also had success with their season opener. Jacob Mellinger (Leetonia, OH / Crestview) placed 4th in the 400 meter run with a time of 49.40 seconds. This time was also good enough for Mellinger to join his teammates at the end of season ECAC track meet.

The Golden Tornadoes travel back to the Beaver Falls to begin preparing for their next meet on March 19 at conference rival Grove City.
