Commencement at Geneva College

Graduation

Geneva College is preparing for the 2016 Commencement ceremonies for graduating students in the traditional undergraduate, adult degree and master’s degree programs. This year, 463 students are expected to graduate. Commencement events will take place on Friday, May 6 and Saturday, May 7.

Baccalaureate will begin the weekend’s activities on Friday, May 6 at 7 p.m. This ceremony will be held in Metheny Fieldhouse. Pastor Andy McCracken from the Columbus, IN, Reformed Presbyterian Church will provide the message.

Traditional undergraduate commencement will be on Saturday, May 7 at 10 a.m. at Reeves Field, weather permitting. Mr. David R. Shedd, Former Acting Director of the Defense Intelligence Agency, will deliver the commencement address.

Shedd served in the U.S. government for nearly 33 years. Prior to joining the Defense Intelligence Agency, he served from 2007 to 2010 as the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) Deputy Director for Policy, Plans, and Requirements, where he was responsible for overseeing the formulation and implementation of major Intelligence Community (IC) policies across the full spectrum of issues, from information sharing and IC authorities to analytic standards, among others.  Since leaving the federal government in February 2015, he has been serving as a Heritage Foundation Distinguished Fellow and as an Adjunct Professor at Patrick Henry College.  Shedd holds a B.A. in Economics and Political Science from Geneva College and an M.A. from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service in Latin American Studies.

During undergraduate commencement, Geneva will present its highest alumni honor, the “Life G,” to Robert A. Morrow. The “Life G” is presented each year to a graduate for service above self, who embodies the principles for which Geneva College stands, and whose efforts on behalf of the college, the community, and the nation have been exemplary. Morrow graduated from Geneva in 1959 with degrees in economics and speech. He worked at Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation, which later became LTV Steel Company, retiring as Vice President of Sales and Marketing.

For the first time, the traditional undergraduate commencement program will be streamed live from Geneva’s YouTube channel so that friends and relatives of the graduates who are unable to attend are able to watch the ceremony from other locations. It will be available at www.geneva.edu/commencement-stream.

An outdoor reception for the graduates and their families will immediately follow on the lawn of Old Main.

In the case of inclement weather, undergraduate commencement will be moved indoors to Metheny Fieldhouse, and tickets will be required to enter. Up-to-date information on the location of the ceremony can be found by calling the commencement hotline at 724-847-6100 or visiting the Geneva’s website at www.geneva.edu.

Commencement for adult and graduate programs will take place on Saturday, May 7 at 3 p.m. in Metheny Fieldhouse, rain or shine. Mr. Paul “Drew” Gordon, Director of Publications for Crown & Covenant Publications, will be the featured speaker.

Crown & Covenant is the publishing arm of the Reformed Presbyterian Church of North America, which governs Geneva College. Gordon has worked for Crown & Covenant for 30 years.  He has also served for 22 years as an elder in an inner-city congregation in Wilkinsburg, PA, and been a member of his denomination’s Interchurch Committee for 15 years. Gordon graduated from Geneva College in 1982 with a B.A. in English

A reception on the lawn of Old Main will follow the graduate and adult commencement ceremony.
