The Geneva College Communication Department is proud to support Professor of Integrated Media Dr. Richard Talbert as he escorts three recent Geneva graduates to the 14th National Communication Ethics and International Association for Dialogue Analysis Conference at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh on June 1-4, 2016.

Dr. Richard TalbertDr. Talbert and three students from his spring 2016 Media Ecology class, Scott Dean, Mikayla Covington and Celia Harris, will present their work as a panel on Friday, June 3. Media Ecology is the study of the basic phenomenon that technology influences all aspects of communication and the human condition. It holds the theory that technology controls all areas of life which in turn affects how humans perceive the world.

Dr. Talbert commented on how apparent it became that Media Ecology class discussions allowed for the students to participate and engage in such a complex topic and apply what they learned in preparation of the panel.

"We had been wrestling all semester with how communication and culture affect each other. The student papers certainly showed a high level of engagement with the material, so it seemed like the perfect opportunity to showcase their talents at a conference. A core group of students from the class were interested, I put together the panel proposal and we were accepted. It's a great opportunity for our students, the Integrated Media program, the Communication Department, and the College."

Dr. Talbert and the students will present on a topic that focusses on Dialogic Ethics and Technology. The presentation topics are designed to fit together and build upon each other. Topics include:

  • “Crazier, Stupider Talk: Misusing Communication Technology in an Attempt to Unify People with Language Framing and Shaming” by Dr. Richard Talbert
  • “Virtual Reality: The Marriage Between Technology and The Senses” by Scott Dean
  • “The Babel Effect: The Technological Intertwining of Freedom, Language, Culture, and Power” by Celia Harris
  • “The Tower of Babel 2.0: Rebuilding the Tower of Babel through the Use of Marshall McLuhan’s Global Village Theory” by Mikayla Covington

Covington stated, "Representing Geneva at the conference is a great opportunity to show that, as graduates, we are serious about continuing to pursue our academic interests. I am confident that it will be a learning experience for us, as well as those who hear our panel presentation.”

The team is excited to support their professors and alumni in this academic endeavor which speaks to the academic excellence of Geneva’s programs.  For more information about the Geneva College Communication Department, visit geneva.edu/academics/majors/communication.
