Inquisitive Culture Critic Tackles Key Questions about Christianity, Conformity and Complexity

Geneva has a knack for bringing in many interesting, intelligent and faithful speakers; Dr. David Dark is certainly no exception. On Thursday, November 10 at 7 p.m. and Friday, November 11 at 10:10 a.m., renowned Christian author David Dark will speak in Skye Lounge. The topic of the Thursday speech will be “How to Remember Well in a Dismembering World” and the topic of the Friday speech will be “Choose Your Ancestors Carefully.”

The Sacredness of Questioning (2009) by David DarkLife's Too Short to Pretend You're Not Religious (2016) by David DarkDark has written several faith-oriented and culturally critical books, his most notable books being Life's Too Short to Pretend You're Not Religious (2016), The Sacredness of Questioning Everything (2009) and Everyday Apocalypse (2002). His writing dives deep into the realm of religion and addresses the many criticisms and questions surrounding religion. Dark is drawn to invigorating open-ended and in-depth conversations concerning religion and education. Asking and attempting to answer questions is a huge part of Dark’s work and life.

Dark, who was born in 1969 and is a graduate of Vanderbilt University, lives in Nashville, Tennessee with his wife and three children. Previously a high school English teacher, Dark received his doctorate in 2011. He now teaches at the Tennessee Prison for Women, Charles Bass Correctional Facility, and Belmont University where he is the assistant professor of theology. Dark’s wife, Sarah Masen, is a successful Christian singer, songwriter and musician.

Dark has contributed his written work outside of books to various outlets, such as MTV News, Books & Culture, Pitchfork, and The Oxford American. Dark is a critic of modern culture and its practices, particularly involving religion. It is no surprise that Dark’s work is a popular read in today’s society as religion and its influence is a pretty heavy topic.

Reviewers and critics have said that Dark takes a stand against shutting out religion and actively works to bring it to light. With his quick wit and humor, he reaches audiences of a wide range of cultural backgrounds and belief systems. He draws from his personal thoughts and experiences just as well. Dark argues that none of us can escape the grip of religion; it is part of who we are.

Dark is a man who finds meaning in everything, even the smallest of things or ideas. His passion for observation and critical analysis of society and religion are evident in his writing and his speaking, making him a very moving and powerful speaker and writer.

This event is coordinated by Geneva College through the Geneva Visiting Artist and Lecture Series (GVALS) program. Both speeches are open to all students, faculty and community members free of charge.
