(BEAVER FALLS, Pa.)- Geneva College is partnering with Outreach Kid's Care to assist with Haiti relief in the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew at the Coaches vs Cancer Tip-Off Tournament on November 18, 2016.  Students will pack 4,000 meals to help feed the people of Haiti who have withstood life altering damage to their homes and communities. The organization Outreach Kid’s Care donated $1,000 for the meals and Geneva is providing the labor.

Geneva College Professors Terry Thomas and Doug Bradbury, Geneva Men’s Basketball Coach Jeff Santarsiero and Aaron Channing, student leader of the Geneva chapter of Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), are leading the effort. Members of FCA and Geneva’s Upper Room will pack the meals and load the trucks from 6:45 to 8 p.m. in the gymnasium during the Men’s Basketball tournament game.

On October 4, Hurricane Matthew, a deadly Category 4 storm, devastated many parts of the small Caribbean country, damaging 80 to 90 percent of homes in some towns. Death toll figures are hard to pin down, but estimates range from several hundred to around 1,000.

Geneva’s Doug Bradbury, Co-Founder and President of the Board of Haiti H2O, a non-profit mission organization based in Pittsburgh, recently visited Haiti and observed the storm devastation first-hand and enlisted the help of the Men’s Basketball team and other leaders.

Thomas, who also serves as a leader in this campaign, explains, “Geneva has a long history of connecting with the people in Haiti.  Students have regularly gone to Haiti on service trips over the last 30 years.  This has resulted in a lot of deep and ongoing relationship with many Haitian communities, and several Haitians who have come to Geneva as students.”

Thomas says that one of the most obvious and critical needs witnessed was the need for food for the hundreds of thousands who were affected by the storm. “We’re looking forward to a great night at the Tip-Off Tournament to come together to support our brothers and sisters in Haiti.”

Teams playing through weekend in the Coaches vs. Cancer Tip-Off Tournament include Otterbein University, Pitt Bradford, John Jay College as well as the Geneva Golden Tornadoes.
