Beaver Falls, PA –Geneva women’s basketball outplayed the visiting Wooster Fighting Scots 20-9 in the fourth quarter but it was too little too late and was forced to take the loss. The Golden Tornadoes open the season 0-1 after the 75-67 decision.

“In the first quarter, the energy was crazy, we got a glimpse of how good we are,” said interim associate head coach Patience Baker.

Geneva edged Wooster 26-24 after the first quarter of play shooting a 43% from the field, 66% percent from beyond the arc. But the Fighting Scots recovered and rolled over Geneva in the second quarter 26-11, 16-10 in the third.

“But in the same breath,” Baker continued, “they showed us everything we need to work on.

The game of basketball is all about runs. We are going to make them; they are going to make them. And our ladies have to know that when the opponent’s run comes it isn’t the end of the world. And we treated it like the end of the world today. We do get better from this game.”

Down 24 points with 2:15 remaining in the first half, Geneva regrouped and started chipping away at Wooster’s lead. The Golden Tornadoes caught fire in the fourth scoring 20 points while holding Wooster to a mere nine.

Miranda Heaney (New Castle PA/Union) had career-best 27 point game to open her senior season. Jodie Carlson (Warsaw, IN/Warsaw) recorded 13 points while Marissa Heaney (New Castle PA/Union) tallied 12.

Off the boards, Noelle Henry (Aliquippa, PA/Hopewell) grabbed eight rebounds supported by Callie Ford (New Middletown, OH/Springfield Local) with seven. Carlson along with Rachel Moore (Vandergrift, PA/Apollo Ridge) helped with six rebounds.

Next, Geneva heads to Swarthmore for a two-day tournament. Friday, November 18 Geneva is set to face Swarthmore at 5 p.m.

“I’m confident going into the tournament on Friday,” said Baker. “We got a great group, I’ve been saying that all preseason. They are going to stick together and build each other up, even when it stings a little bit; they will build each other up and we will be good to go.”
