Dr. Carolyn Stone Addresses Legal & Ethical Complications of Working with Minors in Schools

Not only is Geneva College’s Master’s in Counseling program taught by some of the brightest experts in counseling who are regularly researching and contributing to the field, but leading outside authorities are often brought into the classroom as well. On Monday, January 9, Dr. Carolyn Stone, Chair of the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) Ethics Board who is internationally recognized for her achievements, will speak to an ethics class in the counseling program via distance learning.

Dr. Carolyn Stone, Chair of the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) Ethics Board, Dr. Stone is a Professor of Counselor Educator at the University of North Florida where she teaches and researches in the area of legal and ethical issues for school counselors, and specifically those impacting the opportunity, information and achievement gaps.  She was the 2006 President of ASCA and is in her fourteenth year as the Ethics Chair.  Dr. Stone has written the only book exclusively for school counselors on legal and ethical issues.  She has delivered over 500 workshops in all 50 states and 23 countries.  She has authored six books, dozens of journal articles and serves the courts as an expert witness in cases involving school counselors.

Dr. Stone will talk to Geneva students on the topic of “School Counselors:  Negotiating the Legal and Ethical Complications of Working with Minors in Schools.”  Discussion areas will include confidentiality and duty to warn, minors’ rights to privacy, counselors’ responsibilities toward suicidal children, civil and criminal liability, sexually active minor clients, abortion counseling, child abuse and malpractice in academic advising.

Geneva College’s Master of Arts in Counseling offers academic training for students looking to pursue a career path of professional counseling. Students in the Christ-centered Master of Arts in Counseling program can choose from one of three concentrations, including Marriage, Couple and Family Counseling; Clinical Mental Health Counseling; or School Counseling.
