Pittsburgh, Pa. – On Saturday, February 11 the Chatham University Cougars hosted the Geneva College Golden Tornadoes. Chatham’s deep game tallied 14 three-pointers, edging the GTs, handing them a 71-69 conference loss. Chatham’s win raises the Cougars to tie Geneva as the sixth seed in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) standings. The top eight seeded teams will continue into the 2016-17 PAC postseason. The two-point decision hands Geneva its longest season losing streak at five, lowering the Golden Tornadoes overall record to 9-14, 6-10 in the PAC.

Chatham’s Alex Schoppen went 11-12 in Metheny in the last meeting between two PAC teams. Schoppen brought up the bad memories for the Golden Tornadoes posting a good three-pointer in the first two minutes of the afternoon’s competition. He finished the game recording five three-pointers with 21 points.

The Cougars capitalized on Geneva’s timeout going on a five-point run with 6:54 left in the first half, Chatham 21, Geneva 12. Jimmy Leichliter (Connellsville, PA/ Connellsville) hit a good three at 5:03 moving the score to 24-17. David Oliver (Sewickley, PA/Quaker Valley) joined the deep bucket action putting up a three ball in the last minute before the half. The Golden Tornadoes entered the locker room down by five at 29-24.

By 13:24 in the second half Chatham’s deep game raised the Cougars to a lead-high 12 points. Geneva continued to work, chipping away at Chatham’s early second half offensive explosion. Geneva rallied with a seven-point run moving the scoreboard to 55-52 with 7:31 remaining in regulation.

With 2:11 left on the clock, Ethan Moose (New Castle, PA/Neshannock) stripped the ball and finished the play with a good jumper keeping the game between a couple possessions; 66-63. Joey Jou (Miami, FL/Westwood Christian) tip-in moved the game to a single point differential; 66-65 at 1:18. Geneva couldn’t breach the leader mark, unable to finish its last handful of opportunities.

Geneva’s big inside game outrebounded the Cougars 45-24 but it wasn’t enough to overcome Chatham’s three-point game as the Cougars posted 14 three-pointers against Geneva’s three deep buckets.

Moose recorded the team’s high-point count with 26 points and posted 13 rebounds for the double double. Leichliter also tallied a double double with 17 points, 13 rebounds.

“I am very disappointed with our effort,” said head coach Jeff Santarsiero. “We need to finish games. We are better than we are performing. We will go back to work on Monday.”

Geneva returns to home for the last week of regulation. On Wednesday, February 15 at 7:30 p.m. the Golden Tornadoes host Black & Gold Night to pack the gym against all-time rivals Westminster. Geneva will close the regular season with a White Out Night on Saturday, February 18 at 7:30 p.m. during the program’s senior night.
