Softball’s Offense Showcased Split with Allegheny

Ashley Grow Home Run

Beaver Falls, PA – Geneva’s offense rallied for a split with the Allegheny College Gators on Wednesday, March 31. Allegheny took the 9-7 decision in game one. Geneva answered with a 4-3 comeback win in game two. The split moves the Golden Tornadoes overall record to 11-7, remaining 0-0 in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference.

“I think today is a perfect example that our offense never allows us to be out of the game,” said head coach Van Zanic. “Even the fact that we came back in the first came from five runs down shows that we have a powerful offense when things are clicking.

“To come back in that second game with Casey in the circle to not allow Allegheny to score was big.

“Clara Sevy had a great, great day. Offensively, she had her first career home run and she had some big hits for us.

“I am really, really proud. That was a good Allegheny team that we just split with. That really gives us some momentum heading into conference play,” concluded Zanic.

Game one came down to the final inning of play for the visiting Gators to win the game 9-7. Allegheny struck in the first inning to an early two-run lead. Senior Lucia Fee (Wampum, PA/Mohawk) hit a sacrifice fly to give Geneva the first run of the game in the bottom of the first.

Allegheny created a large gap on the scoreboard in the fourth. The Gators batted in four runs to create a 7-2 deficient that Geneva would have to overcome. In the bottom of the fifth, sophomore Ashely Grow (Beaver, OH/Waverly) and junior Laura Innocenzi (Cortland, OH/Lakeview) were on base for senior Clara Sevy (Sykesville, MD/Chapelgate Christian) who hit her first career homerun to close the gap to 7-5.

In the bottom of the sixth, Fee hit a standing double to get on base. Grow was able to tie the game by hitting the second home run of the game for the Golden Tornadoes, her first of the season. With the game tied at seven runs apiece, Allegheny was able to create some offensive movement to drive home two runs for the late-inning decision.

In game two, Geneva was the first to mark the scoreboard. Fee batted in Haley Sainato (New Castle, PA/Mohawk) for the one run led in the first. That RBI was historic for the senior as it was her 100th collegiate RBI.

The Gators not only tied but took the lead in the third; 3-1. In the bottom of the fifth, Sevy advanced Sainato to third base. Sainato came home off a wild pitch closing Allegheny’s lead to one run.

Fee got things going to open the sixth inning with a double to center field. Grow’s bat stayed hot with an RBI double to center field. Brooke Shyda (Lebanon, PA/Lebanon) took over base running duties for Grow. Laura Innocenzi (Cortland, OH/Lakeview) singled to right field bring home Shyda for the winning RBI; 4-3.

Casey Farkasovsky (Beaver, PA/Beaver) tabbed the win after pitching a complete game.

Geneva will open conference play on in their next doubleheader scheduled for Saturday, April 1. The Golden Tornadoes host all-time rivals Westminster at 1 & 3 p.m. at Conrady Field.
