(BEAVER FALLS, Pa.) – Charlotte Glasstetter, a 2017 Geneva College graduate with a degree in biochemistry, was recognized as an Award Winner at the 31st American Chemical Society Student Members Annual Symposium at Duquesne University this spring. She presented a poster of her senior research project, Novel Protein Denaturants Vary in Their Ability to Denature Model Proteins.

“It’s something to be celebrated,” says Geneva College Professor of Chemistry Dr. Rodney C. Austin. “Charlotte worked all year on this, and it showed the technical know-how and discipline she gained during her time at Geneva.”

Since last September, Austin met with Glasstetter at least once a week to mentor her in her research and preparation for the final presentation in the spring.

Glasstetter’s presentation was one of 22 student poster presentations. During the poster presentation, attendees and researchers informally discussed the work and the research findings. Judges evaluated each presentation by the awards criteria. There was an overall rating for each presentation, and Glasstetter was one of the presenters recognized for exceptional work.

“It mimics what happens when you go to a big scientific conference,” says Austin. “There are presentations in front of a hundred people, but there are also poster presentations which are more typical.”

Judges considered the general appearance of the poster, evaluating its logic and readability, and the study’s hypothesis, data collection and analysis.

Clear communication of the research was another important criterion for judges. Austin says presenters must know the information, but they also have to communicate it clearly, which gave Glasstetter an advantage. “She is a very logical, linear thinker who presents very well, and she consistently demonstrated that strength during the last four years as I’ve mentored her,” he says.

Austin says this award exemplifies Glasstetter’s discipline, putting forth the work every week since the fall semester. “She was really quite a strong student here, and this just showed a lot of hard work,” Austin says. “It’s satisfying for us in the Chemistry Department at Geneva, too, and it shows that we are producing research and doing some fun and interesting work.”
