Spelling Bee participants

Geneva College put their best spellers forward to support adult literacy at the Annual Corporate Spelling Bee held March 13 at Penn State Beaver.

Pitting their skills against 12 teams from a variety of local businesses and organizations, Geneva representatives Dr. Jeff Cole, Professor of History; Jason Panella, Public Relations Staff Support; and Jenny Pichura, Publications Manager, fought to uphold the first-place title won by the 2007 Geneva team.

An enthusiastic crowd of supporters led by Nancy Guthrie, Director of Mail and Print Services, cheered them on as they successfully spelled words such as conciergerie, panache and surtout. But, in a sudden-death round with the last remaining team, Geneva misspelled papilloma, making the BASF Corporation this year’s champions.

The event benefited Adult Literacy Action (ALA) of Penn State Beaver. For over 25 years, ALA has promoted literacy in Beaver County and provided undereducated adults with basic reading, writing and math instruction.
