Senator delivers federal check
U.S. Senator Rick Santorum (PA) visited Geneva College last month to deliver a $1.345 million check during halftime of the GT's football game. Santorum played a key role in securing the federal grant for the college through the $286 billion transportation bill passed by Congress over the summer.
Geneva will put the money to work in Beyond the Bend ~ Making the Path Straight, the college's initiative to remake the campus following the relocation of Route 18. The grant will fund the removal of the old Route 18 roadbed and several abandoned side streets. It will also help cover the cost of building the college's new entrance boulevard and a pedestrian mall in the center of campus.
Construction on Route 18 is on schedule to start in late 2006. <more>

Grant boosts Beyond the Bend
An anonymous donor December 6 awarded Geneva College a $450,000 grant for the Beyond the Bend project, the biggest private gift to this point in the fundraising drive.
The grant brings the total amount of private giving for Beyond the Bend to $1.6 million. The money is unrestricted, meaning the college can use it wherever needed in the campus renovation project.
Deborah Strong, Geneva's stewardship director, first approached the donor last February.
A representative of the donor visited Geneva in June for a campus tour and presentation on Beyond the Bend.
"We get proposals all the time from colleges that want to build buildings," he told Sam Siple, vice president of institutional advancement. "This [Beyond the Bend] is unique. Our grants are very competitive, and we're cutting back the amount of money we give to colleges. We're always looking for something unique."
Geneva has made funding proposals related to Beyond the Bend to 35 private organizations, Strong says, and the college is waiting to learn the results of those requests.
Strong is also seeking private grants for the Geneva Fund, which supports the day-to-day operations of the college. Traditionally, during capital projects donors divert their giving to fund the construction, and annual fund giving slips.
Beyond the Bend is Geneva's plan to enhance the campus following the relocation of Route 18, which is on schedule to begin next fall. The college needs to raise at least $5.7 million in the next two years to fund the improvements. <more>
