Student admissions workers Christiana Demetriou (junior – biology) and Erika Capo (junior – elementary education) greet a prospective student during Geneva’s Feb. 19 open house event.

Geneva’s second Open House of the 2006-07 academic year offered visitors a well-rounded day that included campus tours, sample lectures and question-and-answer sessions.

“This open house was focused primarily for sophomores and juniors to allow them to have an overview of Geneva,” said Karen Berkin, director of enrollment support and retention. “It was a very successful day.”

Many high school seniors also took the opportunity to visit campus, and total attendance was 284, including 119 students – the second-highest turnout Geneva has seen at a spring-semester open house.

Hillary Payne of Buffalo, N.Y., and her mother, Barbara Payne, said they noticed a general friendliness among those they met on campus and also appreciated the interaction with faculty.

“It was very helpful in seeing what the academic life is like here,” Barbara Payne said. “The gentleman who talked to us about the engineering program was really helpful; he answered a lot of questions.”

Tyler Esh from Ephrata, Pa., also found the sample lectures and opportunity to speak with faculty members from each of the college’s departments worthwhile.

“I really liked speaking to the professors,” said Esh, who is currently undecided on a major. “Talking to them has helped me really understand more about the different classes.”
