Alumni Weekend honors Genevans
Alumni Weekend will be held Friday, April 21, and Saturday, April 22. Festivities this year include a reunion performance by Genevans past and present.
Current and former members of the Genevans choir will perform at the Founders Day gala on Saturday as a tribute to Dr. Robert Copeland, who has directed the group for 25 years.
Many former Genevans are excited about the opportunity to sing with the choir once again.
"I graduated last May, and I didn't realize how much I would miss the choir," said Evie Hemphill '05. "From rehearsals to tours to devotions to hayrides, the Genevans was a big part of my college experience. I'm just thrilled at the idea of catching up with friends and singing with everybody again."
"We have had a good response and are currently estimating over 150 former Genevans will attend," said Louise Copeland, church and parent relations director and wife of Dr. Robert Copeland.
The reunion choir will join the present choir for several hours of rehearsal in preparation for the night's performance. The choir will perform at the Metheny Fieldhouse for a dinner concert as the featured entertainment of the Founders Day gala.
Former members of Eight Bells, the men's singing group, are invited to a special practice. The women's group, Grace Notes, formerly known as the McKee Lassies, will also meet for a rehearsal.

Rejuvenating recyclingStudents, faculty members, and physical plant recently joined forces in an effort to get serious about Geneva's recycling program.
The initiative involves educating students and faculty and staff members about what can and can't be recycled and making recycling bins more visible and easily accessible.
Students noticed that recycling bins were being dumped into the regular garbage trucks and brought the issue before the Student Senate. After consulting with physical plant, the senators learned that students were putting regular garbage into the recycling bins. Geneva's garbage hauler then had to dispose of the entire bin as regular garbage.
"The problem was that there was no clear definition of what we do in terms of recycling," said Paul Pishioneri, assistant director of physical plant.
As a result of their findings, concerned students, physical plant and Student Senate pulled together to fix these problems. Resident directors painted the recycling bins lime green, making them easier to recognize. Physical plant also placed small recycling baskets at convenient places in some offices around campus. Physical plant staff members also handed out leaflets about where to recycle different items such as aluminum cans, paper, and plastics.
The program also provides financial benefit to the college, bringing in several hundred dollars a year.
"It's nice to have one bin for each of us," said Vernice McChesney, mail coordinator. "It's convenient and the bins are noticeable, too."
But Pishioneri said that convenient recycling locations alone will not change the system.
"It'll take each and every one of us doing our part to make this work," said Pishioneri.
...PRAY FOR EACH OTHER..."
