Geneva loses honored alumnus
Dr. Charles W. Denko passed away on Oct. 18, at the age of 89. A 1938 Geneva alumnus, Denko and his wife made a $1 million donation to help the college renovate the Science & Engineering Building in 2003. The Denko Science Hall within S&E is named in their honor.
He received his bachelor's degree from Geneva in chemistry and graduated with highest honors. Denko later earned a doctorate in organic chemistry from Penn State and a medical degree from Johns Hopkins University. He specialized in rheumatology, and researched and taught at Case Western Reserve University, where he was an associate professor of medicine.
Denko's research focused on the causes and treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. During his lifetime he published more than 100 scientific articles and presented his findings at rheumatology conferences around the globe. His portrait hung in the Army Medical Museum and Library in Washington, D.C., during the 1950s for his contributions to medicine.
He is survived by his wife, Dr. Joanne Denko, a psychologist and adjunct Geneva professor. They were married for 55 years and have three children.
International scholar headlines Bitar lecture
Dr. Paul Helm will deliver an address, "John Calvin's Big Idea," at the second annual Byron G. Bitar Memorial Lecture in Philosophy.
"We hope to bring visibility to the philosophy program at Geneva and encourage the community of Geneva to engage in philosophical thinking while honoring Byron's memory," says Robert Frazier, associate professor of philosophy.
During his two-day visit to campus, Helm will guest lecture in philosophy classes and interact with students.
The Bitar lecture will be held on Nov. 21, at 8 p.m. in Old Main's John H. White Chapel. Helm will hold a book signing reception after the lecture. Both are free and open to the public.
Helm is an expert on John Calvin and Augustine and is known around the world as an influential scholar, successful author, and editor. He was a professor of the history and philosophy of religion at King's College at the University of London and the J. I. Packer Professor of Philosophical Theology at Regent College.
Dr. Byron G. Bitar was a professor of philosophy who died of cancer in 2003. Lucas Kriner, a former student of Bitar's, and his parents, Bill and Susan Kriner, sponsor the Bitar lecture series.
