katrina2.jpgGeneva responds to hurricane victims

As Hurricane Katrina punished the Gulf Coast, several Geneva College students sat watching the news footage in silence, wondering what they could do when the destruction ended.

These students have a personal connection to the tragedy: Among the New Orleans buildings that were ripped apart by Katrina's rage are houses that were fixed and painted by Geneva students during an annual missions trip to the city. Over the past four years, a group of seven to fifteen students has worked with an organization called Trinity Christian Community (TCC). During its most recent trip in May, the group fixed up and painted two houses owned by elderly women and helped TCC with a building project.

"It's kind of an after school program for kids to go and learn how to read and do better in their studies," says senior engineering major Eric Holland, who has traveled to New Orleans for the past three years. This year the group also helped build a playground for children in the neighborhood.

At night, the group would head down to the French Quarter, walking along Bourbon Street and the neighboring avenues, usually ending up at a park surrounded by the homeless and tourists.

"We would stand around and talk to people, or pass out tracks or sing worship songs," Holland says. "It's a really cool aspect. It's a part of the city that I miss the most. I miss a lot of the people that I met on the streets." <more>

The $286.4 billion federal transportation bill recently signed into law by President Bush contains $1.345 million earmarked for Geneva College. The money will be used for improvements to Geneva's campus after Route 18 is relocated, including new walkways and entry roads to make the campus more accessible.

The $1.345 million goes to the Beyond the Bend~Making the Path Straight project, Geneva's drive to raise $5.7 million to reconfigure the campus after construction on Route 18 is finished. This includes removing the old Route 18 roadbed and several abandoned side streets, creating a pedestrian plaza, and building a campus entrance.

The transportation bill, formally known as the Safe, Accountable, Flexible and Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users, was passed by Congress at the end of July and signed by President Bush on August 10. The bill allots funding for over 6,000 projects federal transportation projects requested by members of Congress.

The funds complement the $1.4 million secured by former U.S. Rep. Ron Klink in 1998 for the relocation of Route 18. The 1998 federal grant went to PennDOT to cover the cost of relocating the road but didn't help with the campus improvements.

Pennsylvania senators Rick Santorum and Arlen Specter backed the funding request on Geneva's behalf.
