Gone are the days of muddy wear and tear at Reeves Field.
The much-anticipated installation of state-of-the-art synthetic turf at Geneva’s football stadium came to a conclusion this summer, with campus and community officials dedicating the revamped field June 29.
The new surface absorbed its first pounding of cleats later that evening as Geneva hosted the 2007 Penn-Ohio high school all-star game. Activity at Reeves will pick up in a few short weeks with the arrival of the college’s marching band, the start of fall football training and the GTs’ home opener Sept. 22 against Bethany College.
Meanwhile, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) crews continue the construction of a new Route 18 to eliminate the hazardous S-curve that has long cut through Geneva’s campus. Despite some hang-ups and delays, substantial completion of the new road is still expected in early November.
“The project appears to be back on schedule again,” says Jim Prince, Geneva’s vice president for operations. “Continue to pray that the project continues on schedule and that the college would be able to regain use of the freshman lot by the start of school.”
As the PennDOT project proceeds, Geneva’s Beyond the Bend improvements are also underway, with the first phase of the stadium project now nearing completion. The second phase on the stadium—along with the pedestrian mall project that will transform the old Route 18 roadbed—should begin in March 2008. The quick actions of two Geneva employees saved the life of a fellow staff member this May.
Mailroom assistant Melvin Lortman had just returned to work after lunch on May 4 when he suddenly felt faint, his body itching and sweating unnaturally.
“He walked over and said, ‘I'm in trouble,’” recalls Nancy Guthrie, the director of the mailroom. She contacted health services director Connie Erwin immediately.
“I reached her just before 2 p.m., when she leaves for the day,” Guthrie says. “Connie knew exactly what to do.”
When Erwin reached the mailroom, she had Lortman lay on the floor. She took his blood pressure and—discovering it was low—called for an ambulance and alerted campus security.
“I was moving like a toy soldier,” says Guthrie, who Erwin instructed to help clear a path for the ambulance. “I then prayed for [Lortman] ‘til the ambulance got here.”
Lortman was taken to the Beaver Valley Medical Center, where doctors discovered that his spell was caused by a severe allergic reaction to an over-the-counter painkiller.
“I felt like my body was going away. It was like I was asleep,” says Lortman. He was kept at the medical center for several days before being released and “really started getting homesick.”
Lortman says he is thankful for Guthrie and Erwin’s intervention and glad to be back at work and back to full health.
“God had the right people in my life at the right time,” he says with a smile. “[Thanks to them], I'm going to live until I die.”

- Praise God for the progress PennDOT is making on the relocation of State Route 18. As a new academic year approaches, pray that the road project—and Geneva's coinciding Beyond the Bend improvements—would remain on schedule and within budget.
- Praise Him for blessing the hard work of the enrollment team, and pray for the members of the Class of 2011 as they begin their college careers in a few short weeks. Also lift up the faculty and staff as they prepare for the students' arrival.
- Ask God to work mightily on Geneva's campus this year—in chapel services, classrooms, assignments, dormitories, study groups, sports teams, musical groups, missions trips, extracurricular activities and more. May He draw students closer to Himself through their labors and experiences on campus.
- Pray for wisdom for members of the college's Leadership Team as they chart the college's course in the near future and as they review candidates for key positions.
