Geneva College Athletes of the week for the week of October 26-31, 2009:

Female:

Jamie Gessner – Soccer
Senior – Midfield
Sunbury, PA

Jamie Gessner has been selected as the Female Student-Athlete of the Week. Gessner willed her team to victory in a pair of must-win games for the Golden Tornadoes. Gessner came up with an assist on Geneva’s first goal in a 3-0 victory over Waynesburg. She then posted the opening goal in a 2-0 win over Thiel on Saturday. One of only two seniors on the roster, Gessner did not want to see her team’s season come to an end. As a result of the two victories, Geneva qualified for the NCCAA post-season.

Solomon Hejirika has been selected as the Male Student-Athlete of the Week. Hejirika had a busy Saturday in Geneva’s 54-21 victory over Bethany College. Geneva improved to 7-1 in part because of the effort by the Golden Tornadoes’ defense. Hejirika led the defensive crew with 11 overall tackles. He also forced a fumble that led to a Geneva score. Hejirika came up with a pair of first half interceptions one of which he returned 48 yards for a touchdown on the final play of the half to extend Geneva’s lead to 40-0 after just 30 minutes of action.
