Geneva College Athletes of the week for the week of March 19-24, 2012:
Liz Michalak – Track and FieldSenior- Multi-Events
Liz Michalak has been selected as the female student-athlete of the week. On Tuesday of last week, Michalak finished second in the long jump at the meet at Grove City College. Her distance of 4.92 meters was good enough to qualify for the NCCAA national meet. Over the weekend, Michalak was even more impressive. For the first time in her career, Michalak took home a first place finish in the Heptathlon event at Wheeling Jesuit. Finishing in the top five in each of the seven events, Michalak tallied 3726 points, which was over 100 points more than the next closest competitor. For her efforts, she has now qualified nationally in the heptathlon.
Nick Edinger – Track and Field
Junior – Distance
Nick Edinger has been selected as the male student-athlete of the week. At Grove City, Edinger stepped out of his comfort zone and still finished fourth in the 1500 meter event. Back in his sweet spot on Saturday, Edinger took first place in the 5000 meter race at Wheeling Jesuit. Edinger passed three runners in the final 100 meters to claim the top spot. His time of 15:21.93 was a personal best and only one second behind Geneva’s all-time record in the 5000 meter event.
For the second year in a row, Geneva’s ABET-accredited engineering program placed in U.S. News & World Report’s Top 100 Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs in the nation.
