Geneva's fall athletic season continued with some of the Golden Tornado teams coming back to reality after seemingly going weeks without a loss. Most notably was the men's soccer team streak that last ten matches before dropping a pair of decisions this past week. The women's soccer team saw its unbeaten streak come to an end, while volleyball enjoyed a 3-1 week. The weather was clearly better than the football result on Saturday and the cross country team enjoyed running in the sunshine of Schenley Park in Pittsburgh.
The men's soccer team ended its week with an overall record of 10-3 which is certainly an impressive number. The bad news is that two of those losses came at the hands of Washington & Jefferson and Westminster this past week. A pair of 2-1 losses slowed Geneva's impressive season run. Austin Petrie scored his first collegiate goal for the only tally against W & J. On Saturday, Kenton Burckhart converted a penalty kick, but it wasn't enough.
Geneva's women dropped a 4-0 decision to Westminster on Saturday to put an end to its six match unbeaten streak. Earlier in the week, the Golden Tornadoes came up with a signature victory against a very good W & J team. Lauren Londino posted her sixth shut-out of the season in the 1-0 victory. Rebecca Shaw accounted for the game winning goal late in the second half. Geneva ended its week with an overall record of 5-3-3.
In the only match of the week, Geneva's tennis team dropped a 5-3 decision to Waynesburg. Maura McLaughlin accounted for a pair of points as she and teammate Jill Grabski won their doubles match and they she was able to take care of business in singles. Amy Weller picked up the other singles victory for the Golden Tornadoes. Geneva sits at 6-5 for the season with just two matches remaining.
On a perfect day for football at Grove City on Saturday the result for Geneva was anything but perfect. The Wolverines jumped out with 21 first quarter points and extended the lead to 28-0 before Geneva got on the board. Freshman A.J. Delmonico provided the spark with an 88-yard kickoff return for the first points of the game. Geneva's only other score in a 38-13 loss came on a Stuart Bell reception from David Girardi. Bell was one of the lone bright spots with seven catches for 77 yards. On defense, Matt Curry led the way with 13 tackles. Geneva sits at 1-4 on the season and will look to turn things around back at home on Saturday against Waynesburg.
Geneva's cross country teams had the opportunity to enjoy the perfect weather on Saturday at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational. Geneva's men finished 11th out of 13 schools, while the women posted a ninth place finish. Rebecca VanRegenmorter led the women with her 20th place finish, while teammate Nicole Okerlund crossed the line in 31st position. The men were again led by the Josh and Josh tandem. Josh Gunnett finished 55th and Josh Falk in 61st position to pace the men.
The Geneva volleyball success story continued this past with victories in three of its four matches. The Golden Tornadoes ended the week with an overall record of 16-5 as they prepare for the upcoming NCCAA Eastern regional tournament over the weekend at Geneva. Last week, Geneva used a 20 kill effort from Adriane Blake for a 3-1 victory over Grove City. After dropping a 3-0 decision to CMU on Thursday, the Golden Tornadoes rebounded with victories over Waynesburg and Chatham on Saturday. Blake added 12 kills over Waynesburg, while freshman Rachel Kuegler posted a combined 19 kills in the two matches. Brandi Snavely, who leads the NCCAA nationally in assists, picked up 67 more helpers in the two matches.
