Chapel Policy
Students have the opportunity to attend 14 Chapels a semester and are expected to attend at least 10 of those chapels.
Tracking your chapel attendance: Students interested in checking their attendance records can view the notebook on the second floor of the Student Center, outside of the Student Center Conference Room (at the top of the stairs, on the left). Chapel records are updated every Friday.
| 1. | If a student attends between five and nine chapels in a given semester (therefore, less than the required 10 chapels) they will receive a “Chapel Warning.” Students receiving a Chapel Warning will receive: | ||
| A. | A fine of $10.00 for each chapel missed. | ||
| B. | Will have 30 days from the beginning of the following semester in which to “make-up” the chapel(s) they missed. Students make up chapels by listening to the chapels they missed on-line (http://www.geneva.edu/object/chapel_audio.html) and write a two page reflection paper on each chapel. Papers are graded on a pass/fail basis. Students must receive a passing grade in order to receive credit. | ||
| C. | Once a student satisfactorily completes the work, he/she will be returned to “good standing.” | ||
| 2. | If the student fails to “make up” the missed chapels: | ||
| A. | The $10.00 fine will convert to a $25.00 for each chapel they missed and/or failed to make up. | ||
| B. | They will be placed on Chapel Probation for the remainder of the semester. | ||
| C. | They will not be allowed to participate in any co-curricular activities, including, but not limited to, athletics, band, choir, club sports, student leadership, study abroad or theater. | ||
| D. | Students will be required to meet with a Campus Ministries staff member. | ||
| E. | They will have an additional 15 days in which to “make up” the chapels they missed. | ||
| F. | A letter will be sent to the faculty and staff, to homes of dependent students and placed in your student file. | ||
| 3. | If a student attends less than five chapels in any given semester they will be placed on Chapel Probation for the following semester and required to: | ||
| A. | Pay a $25.00 fine for each chapel the student missed. | ||
| B. | They will have 30 days in which to “make up” the chapels they missed. Students make up chapels by listening to the chapels they missed on-line and writing a two page reflection paper on each chapel. Papers are graded on a pass/fail basis. Students must receive a passing grade in order to receive credit. | ||
| C. | They will not be allowed to participate in any co-curricular activities, including, but not limited to, athletics, band, choir, club sports, student leadership, study abroad or theater. | ||
| D. | Meet with Campus Ministries staff member. | ||
| E. | A letter will be sent to the faculty and staff, to the homes of dependent students and placed in your student file. | ||
| 4. | If a student on chapel probation fails to complete his/her assigned work they will be referred for further discipline action, which may include, but not limited to: additional fines, community service, counseling, additional work, and/or suspension from the College. | ||
| 5. | At the end of each semester a list of students who are on chapel warning and chapel probation will be distributed to appropriate college faculty and staff. | ||
| 6. | Students have four weeks in order to settle any discrepancies regarding the number of Chapels that were attended. (The Chapel notebook is located in Skye Lounge near the Student Development Office). Any dispute older than four weeks old will not be considered. | ||
| 7. | Temporary ID Cards: If a student loses their ID card they can get a temporary ID card from the administrative assistant in the Career Development office, located on the upper level of the Student Center. The temporary ID card must be obtained prior to the day of chapel. Students seeking to receive chapel credit with a temporary ID card must present that card to Bridgette Hinzman at the information desk in the lobby of Metheny Fieldhouse as they exit chapel. The temporary ID card is good for seven days and can be renewed one time. | ||
