Seminar Descriptions:
Effective Read Alouds
This one-credit course will focus on the purposes and goals for reading aloud on the elementary level, how to choose books and extension activities, and how to read more effectively. Strategies will be demonstrated and students will choose a book and a strategy to model for the class. Those taking it for graduate credit will have some outside reading and writing and those taking it for Act 48 credit will just need to choose a book and activity to do in class.
Best Practices in the Teaching of Writing
Teaching students to write well can be a challenge! This one-credit course will look at best practices in the teaching of writing which will motivate students of all ages.
Challenged Books in Children’s Literature
This one-credit course will take a look at challenged books in children’s literature, the rationale for teaching challenged books and the guidelines for selection of books in a language arts curriculum. The importance of looking beyond the surface of a book to its “moral center” will also be discussed. Note: participants will be expected to read a number of challenged books to better understand parent and community concerns, rationale for teaching and challenging, and potential educational benefits.
