Organizational Analysis: Community Ministry OL Completing this course will prepare students to situation their research project within an organization and to analyze the structure and function of that organization in light of contemporary organizational models. Participants apply theoretical knowledge about organizations to a specific organization and explore how organizations can be transformed into redemptive agents in this world and contribute to human flourishing. BBL 408 Faith Perspectives
This module examines the nature of the Christian faith in a manner designed to help professing Christians better understand their historic faith and grow in that faith and its practical implications for life. This module also aims to present the Christianity to those who wish to explore it and consider its appeal to them. Students will be led to identify and discuss basic human questions about what they long for, about who God is, about what is wrong with major arenas of human life, what might make things better, and about what the future holds. Through readings from the Bible and other sources, students will be introduced to the basic story of Christ and some of its implications for the Christian life today. Analysis and reflection on course content will be assessed through personal reflection and summary papers. 5 Sessions/3 Credits

Community Ministry: Research and Resources OL This course encourages students to develop familiarity with the literature in their major field of study and builds on the research that students began in course 430, with an emphasis on information literacy. Students will identify, access, retrieve, and summarize respected information in the field that is relevant to their research topic. In addition to identifying themes in the literature, students will compare, contrast and evaluate the major perspectives that emerge from their investigation. The final paper for this course will be chapter two of the Applied Research Project. A hybrid online course. 2 Face to face sessions and online sessions/3 Credits

The Church and Its Community This course will examine the role of the congregation as a moral agent for positive change in the community. The course will be divided into three phases of discussion: (1) Developing a theological framework for understanding community (heirs and the disinherited), giving special attention to the faith community as a support group; (2) Overcoming obstacles to community building and exploring resources and strategies for community organizing; and (3) Strategies for reconciliation and conflict resolution in small groups and in addressing public issues. 5 Sessions/3 Credits

Principles of Grief Ministry This course will introduce adult students to 1) the common grief situations that ministry leaders face as they work with people, and 2) practical approaches to ministering to grieving people. In particular, this course will deal with bereavement ministry in its various forms (violent death, expected death, and sudden unexpected death). Adult students will learn basic skills related to assessing grief situations, including when to refer individuals to professional counselors. 5 Sessions/3 Credits

Research Methods: Community Ministry This course will introduce various research methods including library research, participant observation, interviewing techniques, and questionnaire design. It will provide a Biblical rationale for using research in ministry, review and critique case studies of ministries using research, guide students in developing a research strategy for their projects, and assist students in completing their Applied Research Project contracts. The Applied Research Project is a major focus of this course. 5 Sessions/3 Credits

Data Analysis and Display: Community Ministry OL In this course students will move from the collection of data in 432 to the crucial step of data analysis. Using database software students will compile and analyze the information gathered through their data collection instrument. Students will identify the key trends, communicate them with appropriate graphics and draw tentative conclusions about their data. The final paper for this course will be chapter four of the Applied Research Project, which is a complete summary and appropriate display of the data collected for the project. Theology and Practice of Evangelism Adult students in this course will explore both the theological underpinnings of evangelism as well as explore various methods for doing evangelism, with a view toward both becoming more articulate in sharing their own faith and becoming more equipped to giving leadership to an evangelistic effort in their own community. 5 Sessions/3 Credits

Leadership for Mission and Ministry This course will examine the Biblical foundations for the church and its ministry, review the Biblical concept of leadership, explain how to discern and develop spiritual gifts, describe selection and training of leaders, develop a Biblical philosophy of ministry and practice formulating strategies and programs which are deliberately rooted in such a Biblical philosophy. 5 Sessions/3 Credits

CMN 438 Organizational Change: Community Ministry In this course students will move from data analysis and presentation to exploring how to implement change in their organizations. Students will explore types and forms of organizational change, the process of transforming organizations and the impact of change on people in organizations. Students will translate theoretical concepts into active strategies for implementing recommendations for change based on their research. Transformation as a redemptive concept will also be explored. The final paper for this course will be chapter five of the Applied Research Project, which includes at least one recommendation for change and an implementation plan. In addition, students will assemble finalized versions of their research projects as a requirement for this course. 5 Sessions/3 Credits |
