HSS 301 - Social Welfare Agencies/Policies OL This course surveys the history and current development of systems designed to serve those in need. Agencies oriented to meet the needs of special populations (e.g., the aged, children and youth, rural and urban groups) will be explored and the policies influencing their development will be critically analyzed. BBL 408 - Faith Perspectives This module examines the nature of the Christian faith in a manner designed to help professing Christians better understand their historic faith and grow in that faith and its practical implications for life. This module also aims to present Christianity to those who wish to explore it and consider its appeal to them. Students will be led to identify and discuss basic human questions about what they long for, about who God is, about what is wrong with major arenas of human life, what might make things better, and about what the future holds. Through readings from the Bible and other sources, students will be introduced to the basic story of Christ and some of its implications for the Christian life today. Analysis and reflection on course content will be assessed through personal reflection and summary papers. 5 sessions/3 credits |

HSS 202 - Human Diversity This course surveys human diversity in terms of race, ethnicity, gender and social class in contemporary American culture. The effects of oppression and prejudice will be explored on individuals and groups, as well as evaluating the consequences of social policy aimed at alleviating discrimination. Implication for the practice of human services will be discussed. 5 sessions/3 credits |

HSS 305 - Counseling & Helping Skills I This course is designed to prepare the student for practice in human services agencies through the development of culturally sensitive helping relationships. Emphasis is placed on enhancing communication skills, developing interview techniques, and learning basic group skills and group interactive patterns. 5 sessions/3 credits |

HSS 432 - Research and Resources: Human Services OL This course encourages students to develop familiarity with the literature in their major field of study with an emphasis on information literacy. Students will identify, access, retrieve and summarize respected information in the field that is relevant to their research topic. In addition to identifying themes in the literature, students will compare, contrast and evaluate the major perspectives that emerge from their investigation. The final paper for this course will be chapter two of the applied research paper. A hybrid online course. 2 face-to-face sessions and online sessions/3 credits |

HSS 405 - Community Interventions This advanced human service course builds on micro level counseling and helping, as well as, generalist practice knowledge and skills in addressing the human services needs of at-risk groups (e.g. impoverished, mental health, drug and alcohol, children and families involved in child protective services, domestic violence, community violence, adult and juvenile justice, and AIDS/HIV). The course examines special populations in the context of human needs, crisis intervention and other community systems and interventions. Special attention will be given to church based and Christian strategies used to care of at-risk groups. 5 sessions/3 credits |

HSS 307 - Generalist Practice, Model & Theory This course is a continuation of HSS 305 and is designed to further advance the student’s practice skills. Emphasis is placed on identifying client strengths, problem solving, preparing case plans for individuals and families, and community and organizational interventions. 5 sessions/3 credits |

HMT 411 - Humanities OL This humanities course is an introduction to the arts, designed to combine understanding and experiencing the arts in such a way as to enhance adult learners' access to the arts, enhance their understanding of the arts, and heighten their understanding of the connections that exist among the arts and other kinds of experience. HSS 303 - Agency Field Experience This course is designed to acquaint students with program education. Focus is on the processes available to conduct a program evaluation with an emphasis on data collection. The project completed in this course is chapter three, data collection plan of the applied research project. 5 sessions/3 credits |

HSS 230 - The Family System in Context This class will consider the dynamic family in social context. Different theories and topics such as marriage, parenting, communication, conflict, and economics will be discussed. The biblical model of creation, fall and redemption will be the context for this class. 5 sessions/3 credits |

PSS 250 - Lifespan Development This course covers developmental patterns of human beings from conception to death all in the context of God’s created order. Physical, cognitive, social, emotional, and spiritual aspects of development will be considered. Research methods and approaches will be explored as well. |

HSS 434 - Applied Research and Statistics: Human Services Data collection, analysis and evaluation techniques are presented. Specific information covered in the course includes identifying and measuring objectives, collecting data, analyzing variance, and working with levels of significance. The Applied Research Project is the major focus. 5 sessions/3 credits |

HSS 401 - Senior Seminar This course is offered in conjunction with the Field Experience and is designed to support the student’s field experience with structured educational perspectives. The focus is to assist the student in integrating Christian viewpoints and human services theories with actual field practice. 3 credits |

HSS 450 - Field Experience This course affords the student an opportunity to apply knowledge and theories obtained in course work to actual field experience. The student will be supervised in the agency placement by both an on-site coordinator and the Geneva placement adviser. A total of 270 hours will be spent on site during the 17-week term. 6 credits |

A student must complete 90 semester hour credits before participating in the field experience at the start of term three. Students must complete prerequisites Abnormal Psychology, three credits and Introduction to Sociology, three credits by the beginning of term four. Students must complete 126 credits for graduation in the human services major. |
