A concern for underground coal mining operations is the explosibility of the dust generated when mining. When the coal dust reaches a certain concentration, there is a high risk of a mine explosion. To reduce the coal dust concentration, rock dust is introduced into the mine. The rock dust to coal dust concentration is an important parameter for mine safety.
The Center for Technology Development, supported and managed through the Engineering Department at Geneva College, and NIOSH (The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) are developing a portable meter to determine this concentration.
