The Good Society: why bother with the humanities in a time of crisis?
A release from the tyranny of an unreflective "immediate" is one of the key goods of education. In a culture of instant gratification and instant communication, we and our students need help to recognize that beyond the daily pressures of our lives, there is a world in other parts of the globe and in the past of our own and other civilizations that is real, interesting, and relevant to our living fully in the present. Reading the literature of the past will not generally offer immediate practical solutions to present social problems, but it can create a thoughtful and articulate awareness of the contexts and rhetoric of past crises, and thus inform and deepen present response."
